שאול שקד (5 במרץ 1933 - 27 באוקטובר 2021[1]) היה פרופסור בחוג ללימודי הודו, איראן וארמניה ובחוג למדע הדתות באוניברסיטה העברית, חתן פרס ישראל לבלשנות לשנת 2000, ונשיא של כבוד של איגוד האקדמיות למדעים הבין-לאומי.

חייו ופועלו

שאול שקד נולד ב-5 במרץ 1933 בעיר דברצן שבהונגריה למשפחה ציונית דתית, ועלה לארץ ישראל עם הוריו בגיל שנה. למד בבית הספר הריאלי בחיפה במגמה למזרחנות שבה לימד מאיר יעקב קיסטר. החל את חוק לימודיו לתואר הראשון ב-1952 בחוג לשפה וספרות ערבית ובלשנות שמית שבאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, סיים תואר שני בספרות ושפה ערבית ובמדע הדתות באוניברסיטה העברית ב-1959. במדע הדתות הוא היה תלמידם של צבי ורבלובסקי ודוד פלוסר ובלימודי הערבית והאסלאם הוא למד תורה מפיהם של שלמה דב גויטיין, יעקב פולוצקי ודוד צבי בנעט. עוד בתקופת התואר השני החל לכתוב את ספרו הראשון, שהוא ביבליוגרפיה של החלק הדוקומנטרי בגניזת קהיר, הכולל מכתבים, תעודות משפטיות וכדומה (A tentative bibliography of Geniza documents (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Études Juives, V), Paris-The Hague, 1964.). את לימודי הדוקטורט עשה שקד בבית הספר ללימודי המזרח ואפריקה (School of Oriental and African Studies) השייך לאוניברסיטת לונדון, תחת הנחייתם של הפרופסורים הנינג (Henning) ומרי בויס. עבודת הדוקטורט, שהוגשה ב-1964, נסבה על ספרות החכמה והמוסר הפרסית בעידן הטרום-אסלאמי. בשנת 1964/5 לימד באוניברסיטת לונדון.

מאז 1965 הרצה שאול שקד באוניברסיטה העברית, ומאז 1980 שימש כפרופסור מן המניין. היה מופקד הקתדרה על שם שוורצמן באוניברסיטה העברית בלימודים איראניים ובמדע הדתות. היה יו"ר הוועדה האקדמית במרכז ללימודי הנצרות שבאוניברסיטה העברית. שימש כפרופסור אורח וכמוזמן באוניברסיטאות ובמכוני מחקר שונים, ביניהם אוניברסיטת קליפורניה בברקלי, אוניברסיטת הרווארד, המכון ללימודים מתקדמים שבאוניברסיטה העברית, אוניברסיטת ניו יורק, אוניברסיטת קולומביה, אוניברסיטת היידלברג, וולפסון קולג' בקיימברידג', מכון המחקר ע"ש אננברג השייך לאוניברסיטת פנסילבניה שבפילדלפיה, האקול פראטיק דה אוטז אטיד (EPHE) בפריז, המכון ההולנדי ללימודים מתקדמים (NIAS), האוניברסיטה החופשית בברלין, אוניברסיטת אוטווש לוראנד (Eötvös Loránd) בבודפשט, והאוניברסיטה הקתולית ע"ש פזמני פטר (Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem) שבהונגריה.

ב-1985 נבחר לאקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים, ובשנים 2001-1995 כיהן כיו"ר החטיבה למדעי הרוח באקדמיה. הוא שימש ראש מכון בן-צבי, ולאחר מכן, עד 2007, כיהן כיו"ר הוועדה האקדמית של מכון בן צבי. היה סגן נשיא איגוד האקדמיות הבין-לאומי, ולאחר מכן, בשנים 2004-2001, כיהן כנשיא האיגוד הזה. מאז 2004 ועד למותו הוא שימש כנשיא של כבוד באיגוד. ב-1995 זכה בפרס על שם יורם בן פורת. מ-1995 עד מותו היה חבר כבוד בקולג' האוניברסיטאי של לונדון. בשנים 1999-1995 היה סגן נשיא החברה האירופית לאיראנולוגיה (Societas Iranologica Eruropaea). מאז שנת 2000 עד מותו היה יו"ר הוועד המנהל של קרן פרי. מאז 2005 שימש כחבר המועצה בקורפוס הכתובות האיראניות (Corpus Inscriptionum Iranicarum).
